One of my subjects in an animal portraits class. Loved this guy and wanted to capture him adding unexpected color and creating focus around the eyes and nose. Sure had fun with this one…

I love to paint furry animals, especially big cats! This was a demo in a class I taught and it was great fun. Throwing in unexpected color, letting the pigments blend on the page is magic to watch. The class enjoyed painting this one for sure.

Lots going on in this painting… lots of color, look strokes, shadows that define feathers and shapes, very loose, almost abstract background. Lots of fun techniques used on this one.

This was a demo painting in a “Painting Animals in Watercolor” workshop. Lots of people want to paint their animals so this tends to be a fairly popular workshop. Fur is always a challenge, but certain techniques will help you get the look you want.

Such a sweet subject to paint. This wasn’t a class demo, nor a commission, no special purpose. Just saw this little doggy and wanted to paint him.

This is my amazing cat, Danny. I caught him in a quiet moment in the late afternoon sun streaming through my window. This painting won a major award in the 2019 Northwest Watercolor Society Membership Exhibition. Happy about that.

This sweet little puppy was also a demo painting in one of my animal portrait workshops. Animal portraits are just a lot of fun!

I found this reference image on a royalty free site and fell in love with the dog’s face. I loved the gentleness in his sweet expression. This is one of my favorite animal portraits I’ve done.

I love cats! I’ve had so many of them since I was a child, my home doesn’t feel like a home without them. This was a lovely feline that I just wanted to paint and I’m happy with the way she turned out.

Found this image of a cow and thought it would be fun to paint. And it was! This was a demo I did prior to giving a pet portraits workshop at Daniel Smith Artists’ Materials in Seattle.

This is a commissioned painting for one of my best friends. She wanted to give her son a painting of his dog for Christmas. I loved the expression on his face. It was classic!

Loved the reference image for the dog portrait done as a demo at an art fair. If I can capture an animals personality in their portrait, I’m pretty happy, and I think I did that here.
