Such an interesting portrait to paint,. Achieving the darker skin tones and bringing in extra colors were definite challenges, but in the end I was pleased with the result. At one point I was going to take it to the sink and scrub it completely out, but I stuck with it… so glad I did!

This is Rachelle, my “daughter from another mother.” Believe it or not, I did a lot of scrubbing out on this painting – a big reason why using high quality paper is so important! But I ended up with a painting that was accepted into the Northwest Watercolor Society 2022 Annual International Open Exhibition. After all the challenges I faced with this painting, that was a great feeling!

This was s subject I wanted my students to paint. I loved her gorgeous white hair, the wrinkles on her face, and was interested in suggesting a pattern on her dress. I’m very pleased with how she came out, and she was a LOT of fun to paint!

In a parade with chaos all around her, this little beauty was lost in her own world. I had to paint her. “Asian Beauty #2” was featured in “SPLASH 18,” an esteemed, international publication published once a year. Its tagline is “The Best of Watercolor.” I was incredibly honored to receive this recognition

This is a portrait of my son, Matt. The light in the photo cast wonderful shadows on his face that I wanted to try to capture. It wasn’t easy… I have a tendency to paint too light, so had to layer several glazes of additional color on top to deepen the values. However, I ended up with something that I’m pleased with.

David is a good friend of mine. An interesting character, his white beard is so distinctive. I took a photo of him in front of a donors’ wall down at Seattle Pike Place Market, and once it was finished, the title popped into my head… David and Friends.

This is a portrait of my great friend, Craig. I loved the light in the image and wanted to capture that. I also wanted to keep all the background details blurred, focusing attention on his handsome face. Pretty pleased with this one.

This painting was done as a demo before a large group at an art reception. I had so little time to get ready and do the demo, I finished this portrait in 45 minutes… hence the name.

I ran across a photo of this young girl on a royalty free site. I loved the tilt of her head, her wonky straw hat, the barely there smile on her face. She was a doll, and a joy to paint.

Another portrait done in one of my classes. We haven’t painted a lot of younger people and I wanted to see how the group would do. I loved the photo and everyone did a great job on this loose portrait.

This was one of four portraits I painted of the same subject. This one took the least amount of time but turned out to be my favorite. I love the soft expression on her face and the subtlety of colors I was able to incorporate.

This gorgeous woman is another subject I have painted more than once. This version turned out to be my favorite. She was purchased by someone who felt about her the same way I did.

This woman’s face and mood captivated me. Done as a black and white value study, at the last minute, I added color on top. This portrait reminds me of an old, tinted photograph. It was an effect I will definitely try again!
