Another floral painted in a Seattle Women’s University Club class. We were painting from photos but practicing other artists’ styles, which is a lot of fun to do and helps create “muscle memory” of various ways to paint in watercolor. Try it sometime!

My good friend Kay has an amazing backyard and the reference image was taken of one of her many gorgeous plants. Sure was fun to paint, but then… what isn’t?

This painting was a demo in one of my monthly workshops at the Art Gallery of SnoValley, also with no preliminary drawing. The less I paint “within the lines” – or no lines at all – the happier I am!

This work was the third in a series of paintings I did of the same subject. The more I painted it, the looser I got in my execution. This last version was my favorite.

Another demo in a class. Florals are just nothing but fun to paint and my floral classes are a blast. There is a freedom in painting flowers, because it really doesn’t matter if you paint every leaf or petal, or if your colors are perfect. You just have fun!

I did this painting as a demo at the Washington State Fair. There was no preliminary drawing done and I was happy with the way it turned out.

This painting was done in one of my loose florals classes. I loved the reference image and I enjoy the justaposition of hard and soft edges in the finished work.

I gave a course at the Women’s University Club in downtown Seattle, and we painted various subjects quite loosely. This was one of the florals we tackled with basically no drawing first. So much fun to paint this way!

I loved the light on the flowers in the reference photo and set out to recreate it. The colors were intense and I think it turned our fairly well. Makes me happy to look at this painting, and that’s a good thing!
